The third week of competition in the ESP Spring Series featured a $25,000 Grand Prix on Sunday, April 22, in the International Arena at the PBIEC. The class featured 41 top horse and rider combinations with a win for Catherine Pasmore aboard Z Canta, an eight-year-old KWPN mare by Casantos x Abantos, owned by Pasmore Stables LLC. In a 14-horse jump-off, Pasmore and Z Canta had the fastest of eight double clear rounds over the Steve Stephens designed course. Their pace of 35.603 seconds proved to be the winning time.
Jonathan McCrea and Candy Tribble's Twisther finished in second place with double clear rounds and a jump-off time of 37.184 seconds. Andres Rodriguez and Caballito, owned by Arao Enterprises LLC, stopped the clock in 37.824 seconds to finish third.
Class winner Catherine Pasmore has owned Z Canta for three years now after purchasing the mare as a five-year-old from Emil Hendrix. Pasmore explained her progress with Z Canta, stating, "I showed her a little bit in England and I left her over there for that winter and then brought her over here last year for the first time. I showed her in some of the seven-year-old classes and some low and medium amateurs. This year she has moved up and been great. I did one of the young rider classes with her on the grass field and she was fifth in that, she was really good. I also did some of the FEI 1.45m classes on her. This was her first grand prix though and she was really, really good. I am very happy with her."
On her rounds in Sunday's grand prix, Pasmore detailed, "The first round was exactly how I planned. The first half, I was very in control and I was really happy with it. In the end, we definitely lost a little bit of our control and got a bit speedy, but she still jumped great. Then there were a lot in the jump-off and this is her last class until later this summer, so I figured I would just go for it and she was great. That is the first time I have ever actually pushed her and asked her to turn and go fast and she was amazing; she loved it."
Z Canta leaves in two weeks to travel to Germany where Pasmore will show throughout the summer with her trainer, Lauren Hough. Pasmore and Z Canta will show in the eight-year-old young jumper classes as well as the 1.35m, 1.40m and 1.45m classes to start moving up. Sunday's win was a nice send off for the pair with Z Canta's first grand prix victory. "It is really nice after circuit," Pasmore noted. "This is a ring that she has been in for a long time and it was just nice to come down here from school and have one more class before the summer."
