It was Rodrigo Pessoa that won the 1.45 speed class in Cannes aboard HH Palouchin (Baloubet du Rouet) tonight. About midway in the class the Brazilian rider raced around the 12 fence track on the homebred 13 year old, and took the shortest route wherever possible as the course had two options at 4a and b as well as 5a and b, where the riders could a shorter turn to the b-element and save time. Rodrigo crossed the finish line on a clean sheet with the time 54.46.
Edwina Tops-Alexander was next in line on Mel d’Argences (Quick Star), and did not waste any time. She really tried to catch up with Rodrigo, but was slightly behind on 54.93 to take second. Earlier in the class Philippe Rozier rode a blistering fast round as always on Akita (Skippy), much to the home crowds joy. Eventually the pair ended third with the time 55.03.
Many riders used today's 1.45 class to school their horses before tomorrow's big Grand Prix class. Nick Skelton was one of them. Together with Carlo he was clear until fence ten where he withdrew.
