Hough and Dreher swap places in the second competition of the Sparkasse-Youngsters Cup.

Her ride was slightly delayed because the Swedish mare, Ohlala, lost a horseshoe in the warm-up arena. The blacksmith nailed the shoe back on at lightning-speed and then the small Orlando/Cardento mare galloped to victory with Lauren Hough in the second leg of the Sparkasse-Youngster Cup (0/65.76 seconds). “She is simply fantastic, she has got a super nature and always wants to win,” is how Hough described the mare that she has been riding since November 2011. Up until her ride, Hans-Dieter Dreher had ranked first with the Westphalian-bred mare, Canberra R, a Cyrano de Bergerac/Phantom daughter. “Oh, Lauren is faster,” he said as he watched her jump. “I have been riding Canberra since the beginning of the year, she is a super fighter, careful and fast,” commented Dreher, who is competing in Aachen for the second time this year. The day before he won the first leg of the Sparkasse-Youngsters Cup – and Hough had come second. Today, Dreher took just a fraction of a second longer (65.84 seconds) to cross the finish line than the rider from the USA.

The CHIO newcomer, Rolf Moormann, finished third after jumping clear with the 8-year-old Oldenburg-bred Couleur Rubin/Quattro B son, Cedric, in a time of 67.29 seconds. “We bred Cedric ourselves, he is a little spooky, but that also makes him very careful,” the rider from Ahlhorn in Lower Saxony explained. “It is a completely different experience to compete here at the Soers compared to other shows, the whole atmosphere is very impressive. You mustn’t let yourself be too overpowered by it, but we gradually got used to it and now it is great fun,” said Moormann.

The rider who has accumulated the most points after all three competitions will be awarded a special prize by the Sparkasse: A Rhenish foal bred by Michael Röhrhoff, Mönchengladbach. The sire of the foal is none other than Marcus Ehning’s successful stallion, For Pleasure, and its dam is sired by Landadel.
