Two thirds of the world’s top 30 riders are heading for the final of the Global Champions Tour series in Abu Dhabi this week.The starting list includes legendary names in the sport of showjumping, Olympic gold, silver and bronze medalists and also leading riders from the Royal Households of Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.
In a unique climax to the 2012 GCT, the race for the overall title has come down to a cliffhanger contest between Edwina Tops-Alexander and Rolf-Göran Bengtsson. Both riders have displayed consistently strong form during the season with regular podium appearances, and have collected a 196 points each. In Abu Dhabi they will be hoping to hit top form on their star horses Cevo Itôt du Chateau and Casall La Silla. The dramatic duel between Edwina and Rolf will be matched by a fierce battle between riders aiming to finish in the final Top 18 to win a share of around €1 million in prize money.
