The Netherlands win first Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup

Feb 22, 2013

It was already clear after three of four Dutch jumpers in the second round in the desert of the United Arab Emirates. The Netherlands won the first leg of the new Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup competition. An absolute star role was played by Frank Schuttert, who, as a debutant at the highest level in the sport, had a double clear round. Only four of the 36 riders were double clear.

In the first round The Netherlands had two clear rounds ridden by Aniek Poels and Baggio II and a moment later by Frank Schuttert and Winchester HS. Eric van der Vleuten riding Wan Architect and his son Maikel van der Vleuten riding Kisby each had one pole down.

In the second round, Eric van der Vleuten started strong by staying clear. Aniek Poels had four penalty points. Frank Schuttert, who recently won the Grand Prix of Jumping Amsterdam , continued faultless in the second round. It was already clear that The Netherlands had managed to win the Nations Cup. Yet Maikel van der Vleuten and his horse Kisby remained clear. The Netherlands had won the Nations Cup with only four penalty points and six points ahead of Germany and England, who shared second place.

Great Britain and Germany shared second place at ten penalties ahead of France in fourth and Saudi Arabia in fifth place. In addition to Schuttert, two of the three other double clears in the competition came from Robert Smith and Voila (Calvados x Concorde) for Great Britain - while Patrick Sthülmeyer and Lacan 2 (Lando x Contender) produced two clear rounds for Germany. The only other clear on the British team came from Joe Clee on Diablesse de Muze (Baloubet du Rouet x Nabab de Reve), although Tina Fletcher left all the fences intact in the second round - but on the expense of a time penalty. Katrin Eckerman had a great first clear for Germany on the wonderful Carlson (Casco x Calvados), while Holger Wulschner and Cavity G (Caretino x Lansing) produced a faultfree performance the second time around. For France Michel Hecart was double clear aboard Quatrin de La Roque (Quick Star x Kannan).
